Safety conditions

MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW ALL OF THE APPLICABLE STANDARD PRACTICES BEFORE YOU LUBRICATE THE COMPONENT WITH GREASE. IF NOT, DAMAGE TO THE COMPONENT CAN OCCUR.

Procedure

DO NOT APPLY THE GREASE QUICKLY. IF YOU APPLY THE GREASE QUICKLY, IT CAN CAUSE PRESSURIZATION OF THE GREASE CAVITIES AND THAT CAN RESULT IN: PUSHING THE GREASE INTO THE TAIL ROTOR GEARBOX, POPPING OR PUSHING OUT THE SEALS, DAMAGE TO THE SEALS, OR OTHER UNWANTED EFFECTS.

Collect and discard the old grease when it comes out of the trunnion and housing assembly seals.

  1. Lubricate the tail rotor pitch change mechanism as follows:

    1. Cut and remove the lockwire from the boot.

    2. Manually manipulate the tail rotor to extend control rod to see grease.

    3. Slowly put grease (C-172) into the cap assembly lubrication fitting, with a grease gun, until all of the old grease is fully replaced.

    4. Slowly put grease (C-172) into the housing assembly lubrication fitting, with a grease gun, until all of the old grease is fully replaced.

    5. Clean the internal surfaces of the boot to remove the grease.

    6. Safety the boot with lockwire (C-405).

    7. Clean the area.
